What Are SMART Goals?

It is recommended to make your goals SMART to increase your chances of accomplishment. This acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
Whether the goal is big or small, using the SMART method helps to focus efforts and confirm when an achievable goal is accomplished. Read on for more information on each criterion. Below is also an example of a SMART goal, and a worksheet for your kid to fill out.

To learn about steps on building the goal-setting habit read our post on Goal Setting With Kids.

Specific

Be specific about what you want to achieve. Provide details on what actions you will take, including what it will involve, where or when it will happen, and explore why it is important. What will be accomplished?

Measurable

How will you know you have accomplished your goal? What are the steps and indicators along the way? How will you measure your efforts? You can do this by measuring, comparing, or checking your progress.

Achievable

A goal must be realistic and something that one can complete. Ask what skills will be needed and what support will you need. How do you know you can accomplish this goal? What do you need, and who can help you?

Relevant

Why is this goal important? If it is a sub-step to a bigger objective, how does it align? Does this goal help someone else, or will it help you somehow in the future?

Time-Bound

When will the goal be accomplished? Provide an estimate of how long it will take and set a target date when you plan to finish.

SMART Goal Example:

TIE MY SHOELACES

Specific

I want to learn how to tie shoelaces. I will practice every day and try different ways to see what is easiest for me.

Measurable

I will be able to tie my shoelaces without any help. I will compare how much help I need each day to see how I am progressing. I will check how long the shoelace stays on to make sure I achieved the goal.

Achievable

I have to put on shoes every morning for school and can take the time to practice. My parents will teach me and support me. There are also videos showing how to.

Relevant

Tying shoelaces will help me get ready faster in the morning and learn a new life skill I can use all my life. It will also help my parents.

Time-bound

I plan to be able to tie my shoelaces in 3 weeks.
